Bill Nye the Science Guy began his career as an actor and comedian, but he is best known as a children’s science educator. He is zealous about evolution and was honored for these efforts by the American Humanist Association with their Humanist of the Year award in June 2010.
Unfortunately, Nye misunderstands science. He confuses operational or empirical science with historical science, and he equates evolution with science.
To help my younger kids (ages 12 – 17) practice analyzing a worldview, I assigned them to critique an interview Bill Nye gave to Popular Mechanics that was published Feb 4, 2011. Here is the assignment:
This is a 6-question interview of Bill Nye “The Science Guy” in Popular Mechanics:
Science Guy Bill Nye Explains Why Evolution Belongs in Science Education
Read the interview and write a 1 page analysis/evaluation/critique of his reasoning. Explain why you think he’s right or wrong in his arguments.
Nye won the Humanist of the Year award in June 2010 from the American Humanist Association. This site has YouTube videos of his acceptance speech which you can optionally view for supplemental information on his worldview and thinking:
Nye’s Humanist of the Year Speech
Here are some questions to help you analyze Nye’s interview answers:
- Is his opinion well-reasoned from a factual basis?
- Does he understand the difference between operational science (research, observation, experimentation) and historical science (investigation of events in the past)?
- Does he have unspoken assumptions behind his statements?
You can do your report online and email it to me. Mom can help you with the assignment. Your critique is due Friday Feb 25. Go ahead and get started on it. Don’t wait till the last minute.
I encourage parents to give this assignment to their own children, especially if they go to government schools where the evolutionary indoctrination is intense. It’s a good exercise in developing and practicing critical thinking.
Soli Deo Gloria.

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
