The Book of Genesis

The Book of Genesis

More scientific and historical battles, more literary and theological battles have been fought over Genesis than over any other book in history.

Today Genesis is more of a battleground than ever. The prime attack point is the Genesis record of Creation and the global Flood.

Genesis, the book which the Biblical authors reference more than any other, is the very book which is the most attacked, contradicted, disbelieved, explained away, ridiculed, and ignored—by Christians as well as non-Christians.

What is the fundamental reason for this attack? How may it be blunted?

If man can disregard the foundation, particularly the truths of God as Creator and Judge, then man no longer feels accountable to the standards of a higher authority and can rule his own life. The fundamental reason behind the attack on Genesis is rebellion against the Almighty.

Psalm 11:3 asks this piercing question:
If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?

The answer is that the righteous must rebuild the firm foundation of Creation by articulating a clear Genesis-based explanation of life, sin, and death. Teaching foundations stimulates intense interest in Bible truth.

Pocket New Testaments should include Genesis instead of (or in addition to) Psalms and Proverbs. Then people would have the background material of Genesis which is needed to understand the New Testament’s message of the cross.

Introducing his epistle Jude wrote, “I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 1:3) Christians need to take a stand for the truth of Creation in science, history, and philosophy classes as well as in water-cooler discussions. Every Christian should be on the front line somewhere for some issue.

Genesis is the only reliable historical source that goes back to the beginning of time and tells us where our world came from and how we got here. Non-biblical cosmogonies offer only vague myths or speculations, but Genesis provides a definite historical record of real people involved in actual events of great significance for all mankind. A literal understanding of Genesis is fundamental to an accurate worldview.

Genesis is a firm foundation for science, history, theology, and individual lives. It is wholly true and dependable. In Genesis God has spoken clearly and not in riddles or codes. His objective is to communicate to us what we need to know about our origins and our past history in order to lead us to commit our lives to Him in faith and obedience.

Soli Deo Gloria.

Read my October 2007 Bible-Science column:
Noah’s Flood—A Global Event.

It is the Lord of hosts who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding He stretched out the heavens. (Jeremiah 51:15)

  1. Amen! I often think of the work creationists do in military terms. It is a very Biblical picture. 🙂
I like the idea of including Genesis in pocket Bible editions. It’d be something to contact Gideons about.
PS The use of Psalm 11:3 bugs me (not too badly, I respect the people who use it). When you read the context, you find it is being said to David by people who have given up and suggest fleeing. The foundations have not been destroyed; they are as strong as ever. I prefer to think of it as the people standing in the gap as Ezekiel 22:30 describes.

    • Thanks much for reading and for commenting, Cheri.

I think both understandings of Psalm 11:3 (destroyed or abandoned foundations) are applicable today. I have encountered many pastors and Christian leaders who want to downplay and de-emphasize Genesis because they say teaching a literal interpretation of Genesis is a stumbling block to leading people to Christ. I even know pastors who have shut down creationist ministries in their churches for this reason. They want to avoid Genesis with people who believe the evolutionary claims of today’s scientists and “get them saved” without worrying about the identity of the Savior as the Creator. I think this approach is short-sighted and generally ineffective.

It is certainly true that the firm foundation of Genesis and Scripture is as strong as ever. Yet for many it has been destroyed in the sense that their confidence in the literal truth of Genesis has been undermined by scientism. They put their faith in the “assured results of science” instead of in the sure Word of God. Others have simply abandoned Genesis.

The answer for both (a destroyed foundation or an abandoned foundation) is to present clear and logical Genesis-based teaching on origins. Truth will always win out with sincere seekers.

      • Amen! I wouldn’t want to be those pastors on Judgment Day.
My point was the context of the verse. The people saying it had already given up. The idea is vital, but the reference to support it is out of sync. That’s all. 🙂
