Evolutionist Thinking Infects Church

We live in a swamp of evolutionist thought. People act on unconscious evolutionist assumptions which negatively impact the church.

Los Angeles pastor Erwin McManus is an example. He argues in his books An Unstoppable Force and The Barbarian Way that the church must adapt to the world in order to be culturally relevant. He supports this with faulty evolutionary analogies. McManus says the church should adapt to the world (its environment) in order to survive, just as living species adapt to their environments, according to the evolutionary paradigm.

This is fallacious thinking. The church should be the pillar and support of the truth (1 Tim 3:15) and should call the world to repent and adopt Scriptural principles. The church should influence the world for righteousness. It should resist adopting the culture’s mindset. The world should adapt to the Church, not the Church to the world.

Sadly, influential churches like Saddleback and the Willow Creek Association have also been infected and support McManus. Saddleback’s Pastor Rick Warren endorsed McManus’ An Unstoppable Force with “I love this book because Erwin loves the church. Growing churches require growing leaders. This book will help you along the way.”

Kevin Reeves’ review describes Willow Creek Association churches’ use of The Barbarian Way book.

McManus endorses open theism (a theology which denies the sovereignty and omniscience of God), and he is part of the Emerging Church movement.

Evolutionist thinking has negative repercussions for the church. Biblical thinking has positive repercussions.

Soli Deo Gloria.

But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. (1 Timothy 3:15)
