28. Age of the Earth—Prof. Leupold

(2 Minute Read)

Earth

Today scholars argue for long ages primarily because they think science has “proved” long ages. But many contemporary scholars interpret the genealogies literally, leading to thousand-year ages for Earth.

H. C. Leupold (1892-1972) was Professor of Old Testament Theology at Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. His renowned two-volume commentary Exposition of Genesis discussed chronology based on the genealogical record in Genesis:

“There is no reason for doubting the correctness of the chronology…This is and is intended to be a complete chronology, complete as far as marking the actual lapse of time is concerned. No other nation has anything to compare with it. Yet, strange to say, the only reliable chronology which we have, which actually purports to be an adequate chronology dating back to Creation, is continually being questioned, corrected, amended and condemned in favor of fallible documents which are historically but poorly attested and marked by many a gap. The claim that the Scriptures do not give a complete and accurate chronology for the whole period of the Old Testament that they cover is utterly wrong, dangerous and mischievous. At the slightest objection men are ready to cast aside as inadequate the only adequate chronology mankind possesses.”
(Leupold, Exposition of Genesis, Baker, 1942, vol 1, p.237)

Soli Deo Gloria.

This is the 28th in a series of blog posts on the Age of the Earth. I began with the Biblical testimony that the earth is 6,000 years old, because the evidence from nature should be interpreted and understood in the light of clear Biblical truth. The prequels have considered the issue’s importance, what Jesus thought, and the Genesis genealogies. Current posts are surveying the historic teaching of the church. Future articles will discuss scientific evidence on the age of the earth, explaining fallacies of radiometric dating methods and giving examples of scientific methods which yield short ages.

“To whom then will you liken Me that I should be his equal?” says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power not one of them is missing.
(Isaiah 40:25-26 NASB)
