5. Famous Thinkers – Rocket Scientist Supports Intelligent Design

What world-famous rocket scientist believed in intelligent design and creation and said this?

“An outlook through this peep hole at the vast mysteries of the universe should only confirm our belief in the certainty of its Creator. I find it as difficult to understand a scientist who does not acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the existence of the universe as it is to comprehend a theologian who would deny the advances of science.”

This man received 12 honorary doctorates throughout his career and was the scientist who convinced President Kennedy that America could win the race to the moon.

Who was he?

Dr. Werner von Braun

These words were spoken by a German rocket scientist, aerospace engineer, and the chief architect of the Saturn rocket that took men to the moon. He was the first director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. His name was Werner von Braun (1912 – 1977).

Von Braun was the preeminent scientist in Germany’s rocket program during World War II and primarily responsible for the V2 rocket.

Soon after surrendering to the Americans in 1945, von Braun said to the press:

“We knew that we had created a new means of warfare, and the question as to what nation, to what victorious nation we were willing to entrust this brainchild of ours was a moral decision more than anything else. We wanted to see the world spared another conflict such as Germany had just been through, and we felt that only by surrendering such a weapon to people who are guided by the Bible could such an assurance to the world be best secured.”
From Mike Wallace’s television biography of Wernher von Braun, video clip of the press statement.

Von Braun also said,

“My experiences with science led me to God. They challenge science to prove the existence of God. But must we really light a candle to see the sun?”

Commentary on von Braun’s Quotes
Like Paul in Romans 1:19-20, von Braun argued for the existence of a Creator based on common evidence in nature that everyone sees. Von Braun viewed the existence of the Creator as obvious, and could not understand how someone could deny His existence.

Dr. Werner von Braun was one of the greatest and most intelligent scientists of the 20th century, and he was convinced of a Creator. The arrogance and hubris of today where man thinks he’s so advanced and despises the wisdom of previous generations regarding the existence of a Creator is foolish.

Belief in a Creator is common sense based on looking at what has been created, just as the Apostle Paul (Acts 1:18-23), President Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Sir Isaac Newton, John Calvin, Dr. Werner von Braun, and innumerable others have argued. The vast majority of mankind throughout history has known that there must be a Creator.

Werner von Braun was not fooled by the evolutionism that fools so many intellectuals today. He believed in a Creator and Intelligent Designer. Today’s intellectuals would also do well to pay heed to one whose intellectual prowess far exceeded their own.

Soli Deo Gloria.

This is the fifth installment in the Famous Thinkers series highlighting great men of the past who believed in a Creator.

Read my September 2011 newspaper column:
Adam’s Mythical Diary 4.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
