Congressman Stands for Creation

Dr. Paul C. Broun Georgia Congressman

“All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell.”

This is what U.S. Congressman Dr. Paul C. Broun (R-GA) said at the Sportsman’s Banquet for Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia, on September 27, 2012.

Dr. Broun serves on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. He lives in Athens, GA and has represented Georgia’s 10th District in Congress since 2007. Broun is a medical doctor whose undergraduate degree is in Chemistry. He is running unopposed for re-election to Congress.

The Congressman is known for Broun’s 4-Way Test which grew out of his commitment to protect the Constitutional rights and wallets of Americans. He applies this test to all legislation that comes before the House for a vote:
1) Is it Right/Moral?
2) Is it Constitutional?
3) Is it Necessary?
4) Is it Affordable?

Here is a YouTube video clip (1:25) of part of Dr. Broun’s talk at the Sportsman’s Banquet.

Here is a transcript of Dr. Broun’s comments from this video clip:

God’s word is true. I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says.

And what I’ve come to learn is that it’s the manufacturer’s handbook, is what I call it. It teaches us how to run our lives individually, how to run our families, how to run our churches. But it teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in society. And that’s the reason as your congressman I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I’ll continue to do that.

Public Reaction
Predictably, response was ferocious, as journalists and commentators fulminated with outrage, scorn, and disbelief that a person with such views sits in Congress and helps determine science policy and funding for the U.S.

Here is one sarcastic report and video clip from a liberal political commentator: Rachel Maddow Slams GOP House Science Committee Members.

The Tucson Citizen called Broun “a superstitious, religious zealot” and a “superstitious ignoramus.” (See Atheist facepalm! U.S. House Representative Paul Broun from Georgia.)

Comments on the news articles and blogs were even more scathing than the articles. See for example comments on the Cosmic Log on NBCNews.com and Maddow’s blog Paul Broun is on the House Science Committee.

Many pundits, bloggers, and commenters spoke of Dr. Broun in language so strong and offensive it is not fitting even to link to the sites.

Former television host Bill Nye the Science Guy (an Obama supporter) called Republican Broun “unqualified” because of his creationist views. In an email to The Huffington Post Nye wrote,

“Since the economic future of the United States depends on our tradition of technological innovation, Representative Broun’s views are not in the national interest. For example, the Earth is simply not 9,000 years old. He is, by any measure, unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology.”

Is Bill Nye inviting scrutiny on who is “unqualified” in the realm of science? Nye’s own status is merely that of a media personality. Bill Nye pontificates freely on the weightiest science topics even though his only degree is a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering.

On the other hand, Dr. Broun’s scientific credentials include a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an M.D. degree. Medical training includes learning advanced levels of basic science to prepare for learning graduate-level medical science. Doctors practice as scientists as they observe, test, and experiment with treatments. Believing the Bible does not strip a scientist of his scientific credentials and abilities.

Change.org even has a petition to the U.S. House of Representatives to remove Dr. Broun from the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. The petition calls Broun “incompetent scientifically” and has over 84,000 signees so far.

Commentary
Broun’s critics have, as usual, confused the operational science of today with historical science. Operational science utilizes observation and experimentation to see how things work in the present and to develop solutions. Historical science tries to draw conclusions about the unobservable, untestable, and unrepeatable past based on present-day evidence. Beliefs about the unobservable, unrepeatable, untestable past–such as Evolution and the Big Bang Theory–have little to do with developing technology and scientific advancements today.

Actually, Dr. Broun’s conclusion was spot-on. Evolution, the Big Bang, and the theory of embryonic recapitulation are simply beliefs about the past with no concrete evidence. (Broun mis-spoke when he named embryology, which is simply the study of embryo development, a field of biology and medicine. He was thinking of “Embryonic Recapitulation,” the now-discredited and discarded theory that embryos growing in the womb repeat stages of evolutionary development.)

Not only is evidence non-existent, but Evolution, the Big Bang, and embryonic recapitulation are actually lies. For example, the embryological theory of evolutionary development was concocted by German zoologist Ernst Haeckel in 1868. He purposefully distorted diagrams of humans in the womb to purportedly show the development of the embryo through its supposed evolutionary history. This is known as “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” — which means, embryonic development re-enacts the evolutionary development of ancestors. This is a completely discredited theory.

The Big Bang is another lie to divert credit and glory from the Creator. “Nothing exploded into everything” is the Big Bang theory in a nutshell. How absurd!! Out of nothing, nothing comes! The prevailing worldview asserts the universe popped into existence with a Big Bang 15 billion years ago. How could this be? What caused the explosion? Where did the matter and energy for it come from? How did the physical laws that governed the explosion originate? Click article The Big Bang! for scientific and Biblical arguments why the Big Bang is a lie.

Scripture says that men know the truth about God through His creation, but they have suppressed it in wickedness and traded the truth for a lie (Romans 1:18-25). Men have exchanged the truth of God the Creator for the lie of evolution.

Broun was right that molecules-to-man evolution, the Big Bang, and embryonic recapitulation are “lies straight from the pit of Hell.”

Jesus Himself called the devil the “father of lies.”

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.” Jesus of Nazareth (John 8:44)

We should not be “ignorant of Satan’s schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:11). Scripture warns against being deceived as Satan “deceived Eve by his craftiness” (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Opposing ungodly theories like molecules-to-man evolution, the Big Bang, and embryonic recapitulation is a struggle with the Evil One who deliberately assaults God’s glory as Creator in a strategic foundational attack.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

Dr. Broun is right that “God’s word is true.” He is right that the purpose of the lies is to prevent man from knowing the Savior. The widespread mocking of Dr. Broun indicates how far removed American society is from a Biblical worldview.

I’m glad there’s at least one Congressman courageous enough to speak the truth and publicly oppose the Lie of Evolution.

Three CHEERS for U.S. Congressman Dr. Paul C. Broun.

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)
Tuesday October 16, 2012 A.D.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, that their bodies might be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 1:18-25)

Responses

  1. I’m curious Paul Broun said embryology, yet the author of this article goes on about embryonic recapitulation.

These are two completely different subjects, and the latter concept is outdated. No science textbook I’ve examined over the last forty odd years holds it in such high regard as it once was held. But there’s no denying that there are known events in the development of the human embryo that can only be understood if evolution is true.

And if Paul Broun meant recapitulation, why didn’t he clarify this in his speech?

    • As I mentioned in my blog post above, I believe Broun mis-spoke when he said “embryology.” He certainly had in mind embryonic recapitulation and just couldn’t remember the correct name for the idea.

There are no aspects of human embryo development that require evolution.

  2. Explain then the growth and development of the facial structures, cardiovascular system and the kidneys, to name just three aspects of the embryo’s development in the womb without recourse to evolutionary theory.

    • The burden of proof is on you to show facial structures, kidneys, and the cardiovascular system developed through evolution since you are the one making this claim. No one has ever outlined the millions of incremental steps needed to develop for example a kidney from scratch through evolution with the developing organ being functional at each stage and each incremental change adding a survival advantage to the organism.

Evolutionary biochemist Franklin Harold (Professor Emeritus at Colorado State University) wrote, “We must concede that there are presently no detailed Darwinian accounts of the evolution of any biochemical or cellular system, only a variety of wishful speculations.”
(See Harold, Franklin M. The Way of the Cell: Molecules, Organisms and the Order of Life, Oxford University Press, New York, 2001, p. 205.)

I believe the Creator designed these systems from the beginning and programmed their development in utero into the DNA code. (That’s how I explain it “without recourse to evolutionary theory.”)

I stand by my earlier statement: “There are no aspects of human embryo development that require evolution.” My quote above from the book by the highly respected evolutionist Franklin Harold supports this.

If you believe human embryo development requires evolution, then the burden is on you to prove that an embryo development requires evolution.
