Bill Nye’s Campaign Against Creation #4

Tower of Evolution propaganda

Do you believe in molecules-to-man evolution?

Bill Nye the Science Guy thinks everyone should believe in molecules-to-man evolution. He thinks it is obvious that Creationism is wrong and Evolutionism is correct and that children should therefore be taught only evolution. But Bill Nye will change his mind; he will eventually become a creationist.

This continues a series of weekly posts responding to Bill Nye’s wildly popular recent YouTube video in which he urges parents not to teach Creationism to their children because he claims that will hinder the advance of science in the U.S. (For reference, Nye’s video and transcript are included at the end of this post.)

The purpose of this series is to rebut Nye’s thinking and critique his remarks, identify his mistakes, analyze his bias, and apply Biblical passages to see whether Christians should follow Nye’s advice with their children.

Part One of this series contained these two sections:
1. Nye’s Video with Transcript
2. Critique of Nye’s Remarks
Part Two of this series contained this section:
3. Rebuttal: Creationism Does NOT Threaten Science
Part Three of this series contained this section:
4. Nye Is Not Objective

Part Four of the series contains these two sections:
5. Evolutionist Proselytizing
6. Nye’s Mistakes

5. Evolutionist Proselytizing
A barrage of evolutionist propaganda bombards people daily from television, newspapers, magazines, movies, textbooks, and classrooms. Americans swim in an ocean of evolutionary thought, sometimes barely keeping their heads above the surging waves. Nye is just one of many seeking to convert people to evolutionism.

And yet, the evolutionists’ 150-year propaganda crusade to convince people of molecules-to-man evolution through random processes has not been very successful, except among the self-styled “intelligentsia” who are blinded by their own pride.

The Gallup organization has polled Americans’ views on creation and evolution for 30 years. During history’s most intense evolutionary propagandizing in government schools, colleges, and the media, Creationism has remained far and away the most popular response. Over that period, the yearly number of Americans who said they believed God created humanity in its present form within the past 10,000 years ranged from 40% to 47%.

The most recent Gallup Poll in June reported:
46% of Americans believe in creationism,
32% believe in theistic evolution, and
15% believe in atheistic evolution.

Why have so many Americans rejected atheistic evolution despite the propaganda drumbeat?

One reason is that it conflicts with Biblical Christianity.

A second reason is that it makes no sense: people know instinctively that every effect requires a cause. The complexity of the universe at every level, from sub-atomic particles to the human brain to the far-flung galaxies, displays the intelligence of a Master Designer. Such multi-level complexity could not arise by chance.

Nye says in the video that the creationist worldview won’t exist in a couple of centuries. He is dead wrong. One-time evolutionist Carl Sagan, whom Nye quotes, is now a creationist, having met his Maker. Likewise so are deceased evolution propagandists Isaac Asimov and Stephen Jay Gould; they have faced the Creator they so audaciously dismissed. Within fifty years, die-hard evolutionists Richard Dawkins, Bill Nye, and Stephen Hawking will all be creationists. In the end, everybody will be a creationist–starting after death, if not earlier. (Philippians 2:9-11)

6. Nye’s Mistakes
Here is a brief summary of Nye’s main errors in his video (discussed in more detail in Part One and Part Two of this series:

  1. Nye wants to censor information and prevent children from learning about creation.
  2. Nye confuses operational science and historical science.
  3. Nye hijacks the credibility of operational science to support an evolutionary interpretation of history. Operational science and history are distinct.
  4. Nye thinks technological development requires belief in molecules-to-man evolution; however, no technology uses this. Many eminent scientists and innovators have been and are creationists.
  5. Nye admires technology and recognizes it requires creators. But the technology is trivial in complexity compared with the technology developers, whom he assumes arose by chance.
  6. Nye laments America’s denial of evolution, because he thinks it hinders technological advancement. But he also identifies America as the world’s technology leader. This is logically inconsistent.
  7. Nye is wrong that only in America is evolution denied. Many other cultures and religions believe in a Creator (like Jews, Muslims, many African societies, etc.).
  8. Nye mistakenly identifies evolution instead of the Law of Biogenesis as the fundamental idea of biology.
  9. Nye argues based on assumed explanations of dinosaurs, fossils, radioactivity, and billions of years because evolution requires great spans of time. But the earth is not billions of years old. Much scientific evidence points to an age of only thousands of years, not billions (see Age of the Earth 6 — Scientific Dating Methods).
  10. Nye is blind to the omnipresent evidence for creation.
  11. Nye thinks creationism will die out. Wrong. The Creator and His Word will outlast the creature.

This 4-minute video Evolutionism Is Not Appropriate for Anyone from Creation Ministries International answers Nye’s video and corrects his mistakes. It’s modeled on Nye’s video using the same style and words Nye used, but reversing his claims.

Nye’s Video with Transcript (for reference from Part One of this series)
In this recent YouTube video Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children, Bill Nye warns against teaching creationism to children. The two-and-a-half-minute video is from the online think tank Big Think. The video has gone viral with over 4,813,000 views, 223,000 comments, 81,000 Likes, and 16,000 Dislikes since it was posted on August 23, 2012.

Bill Nye is best known for his “Bill Nye the Science Guy” TV programs on PBS in the 1990s. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and worked for Boeing. In 2010 he received the Humanist of the Year award from the American Humanist Association.

Here is a transcript of Nye’s video remarks:

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we’re the world’s most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that’s largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn’t believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It’s like, it’s very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You’re just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.

As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, “When you’re in love you want to tell the world.” So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don’t believe in evolution. And my response generally is “Well, why not? Really, why not?” Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don’t believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they’re at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.

And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

It’s just really hard a thing, it’s really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I’m sure, will be, it just won’t exist. There’s no evidence for it.

We will not conceal them from their children,
But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
For He established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers,
That they should teach them to their children,
That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born,
That they may arise and tell them to their children,
That they should put their confidence in God, and not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments. (Psalms 78:4-7)
