12. Famous Thinkers – Chemist Is a Creationist 2

Robert Boyle (1627–1691) was a world-famous chemist and physicist who believed in a Creator, specifically the God of the Bible. He is recognized as the father of modern chemistry. This post continues the look at Boyle’s life and convictions that was begun last week in
11. Famous Thinkers – Chemist Is a Creationist 1.

That post surveyed Boyle’s scientific achievements and used selections from his extensive writings to demonstrate his unwavering belief in the Creator.

Boyle’s Christianity
Boyle’s scientific prowess did not interfere with his faith. He saw no contradiction between science and faith. In fact, in 1675 he wrote a paper arguing for the harmony of faith and science: Some Considerations about the Reconcileableness of Reason and Religion, with a Discourse about the Possibility of the Resurrection.

Unlike many today, Boyle’s approach to harmonizing science and faith did not dilute or waffle on the authority and integrity of Scripture. In his 1663 book, Some Considerations Touching the Usefulness of Experimental Natural Philosophy [Science], Boyle defended scientific research because it would lead Christians to glorify God, help in understanding the Bible, and contribute to a defense of Christianity. Boyle believed the study of nature should lead men to nature’s Creator God, not away from Him.
(Note: In Boyle’s day Philosophy and Natural Philosophy were the terms used for what today we call Science.)

Boyle appealed to Scripture to support man’s dominion over nature as a stewardship from the Creator. He believed science was one of man’s tools in understanding and exercising this God-given dominion. Boyle wrote,

“Many other [Scripture] texts that show how much God was pleased to intend man’s welfare and dominion over many of his fellow-creatures, might be here alleged. But I shall content myself to mention what the kingly prophet says in the 8th psalm: ‘Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thine hands, and hast put all things under his feet.'” [Psalm 8:6]
(From A Disquisition about the Final Causes of Natural Things, 1688)

Boyle was a devout Christian and diligent Bible student who supported missions and Bible translation. He became a director of the East India Company for the sole purpose of promoting Christianity in India. He spent large amounts of his own money to promote Christian missions in the East. This included sponsoring translation of the Gospels and Acts into Malay and printing and shipping 500 copies at his own expense. He served as governor of the Corporation for the Spread of the Gospel in New England in order to teach the Bible to American Indian peoples.

Boyle studied the Bible in its original languages to better understand the Scriptures. His knowledge of the Bible’s original languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic–plus Latin, Syriac, Chaldean, French, and Italian–motivated his concern for accurate translations of the Bible. Boyle believed the Bible should be available to people in their native language, so he donated generously to support Bible translation projects in various languages, including Welsh, Turkish, and various American Indian languages. He personally financed and supervised the translation and printing of the entire Bible in Gaelic for his native land of Ireland.

Boyle had the courage of his convictions. He believed all the races were descended from a single pair of humans, Adam and Eve, just as Genesis says. Thus Boyle believed in a single human race, despite this belief being ridiculed by his scientific peers.

In 1665 he was offered the position of Provost of Eton College provided he would be ordained. He refused because he believed that his theological writing would have greater impact coming from a layman than from a paid official of the church.

Robert Boyle was one of the greatest scientists of the 17th century. He was convinced of a Creator and was a passionate student of Scripture. For Boyle, creation required a Creator–the God of the Bible. Boyle would not have been duped by the evolutionism that deludes so many intellectuals today. How foolish is the arrogance and hubris of today–where man thinks he is so advanced and despises the wisdom of previous generations regarding the existence of a Creator!

Belief in a Creator is common sense based on looking at what has been created, just as the Apostle Paul (Romans 1:18-23), President Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Sir Isaac Newton, John Calvin, Dr. Werner von Braun, George Washington Carver, Johann Kepler, Blaise Pascal, Robert Boyle, and innumerable others have argued. These men believed in a Creator and Intelligent Designer. None would have been fooled by the evolutionism that hoodwinks so many today. Throughout history the vast majority of mankind has known that there must be a Creator.

Boyle believed in the Creator and honored his written Word. Today’s intellectuals would do well to pay heed to one whose scientific discoveries far exceed those of most scientists today. Boyle has earned credibility and respect for his opinion.

The next post will discuss Boyle’s Apologetics.

Soli Deo Gloria.

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)
Wednesday January 23, 2013 A.D.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
