Complex designs require a Designer to produce them. The kind of information the designs contain can only come from an intelligent Agent. This is the Argument from Design. The prequels of this Evidence for God series have extensively discussed the Design Argument.
Evolutionists promote the view that scientists support Evolutionism and that scientists do not believe evidence for design. But this is false. Many eminent scientists accept the Argument from Design.
This article and its prequel/sequels present quotations from a number of scientists who have been convinced by the Argument from Design.
Isaac Newton (1643–1727) was a brilliant scientist who made ground-breaking discoveries in many fields including mathematics, classical mechanics, and optics. Newton applied the Argument from Design when he said,
“This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.”
– Sir Isaac Newton, Principia Mathematica (1687)
Newton, commenting on the complexity of the human eye, also said:
“Did blind chance know that there was light and what was its refraction and fit the eyes of all creatures after the most curious manner to make use of it? These and such like considerations always have and ever will prevail with mankind to believe that there is a Being who made all things and has all things in His power and who is therefore to be feared.”
(From the “Of Atheism” section in Newton’s essay A short Schem of the true Religion).
Stephen Hawking is a world-famous physicist who held the same professorial chair that Newton once did. When Hawking was asked whether science and Christianity were competing world views, he replied,
“Then Newton would not have discovered the law of gravity.”
(From Henry F. Schaefer, The Big Bang, Stephen Hawking, and God, 2004, p. 11)
Stephen Hawking does not acknowledge God himself, but he knows that Isaac Newton was a resolute Christian. He’s saying that science and Christianity are not mutually exclusive because the strong Christian Isaac Newton made fundamental scientific discoveries.
George Washington Carver
An eminent scientific researcher in botany and agricultural science, George Washington Carver (1864/5-1943) developed over 300 uses for the peanut and hundreds of uses for soybeans, pecans, and sweet potatoes. This included products for cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, adhesives, lubricants, fuels, hygiene, food, and milk.
Carver was the first non-president to have a national monument dedicated to him. He appeared on US commemorative stamps in 1948 and 1998. Two US ships were named in his honor including a nuclear submarine. Scores of schools are named for him. Three American presidents consulted Carver — Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin Roosevelt.
Carver believed in a Creator. He based this certainty on common evidence in nature that everyone sees. He said,
“Most of the things I do are just cookery. These are not my products. God put them here and I found them.”
“I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.”
“Nature in its varied forms are the little windows through which God permits me to commune with Him, and to see much of His glory, majesty, and power by simply lifting the curtain and looking in.”
“Never since have I been without this consciousness of the Creator speaking to me through flowers, rocks, animals, plants, and all other aspects of His creation.”
(Quotes from the George Washington Carver National Monument near Diamond, Missouri which I visited in September 2011.)
Like Paul in Romans 1:19-20, Carver “heard” the Creator’s voice in nature. He saw the glory, majesty, and power of the Creator in His creation.
Amherst College astronomy professor George Greenstein is a pantheist, yet he said,
“As we survey all the evidence, the thought insistently arises that some supernatural agency, or rather Agency, must be involved. Is it possible that suddenly, without intending to, we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being? Was it God who stepped in and so providentially created the cosmos for our benefit?”
(Greenstein, George. The Symbiotic Universe: Life and Mind in the Cosmos, William Morrow, 1988, pp. 26-27.)
Greenstein argues that empirical evidence points to a supernatural Designer for the universe.
These three men are eminent scientists. All three used the Argument from Design as evidence for the existence of God. These men believed in a Creator based on looking at what has been created. None would have been fooled by the evolutionism that hoodwinks so many today. Throughout history the vast majority of mankind has known that there must be a Creator because of the Argument from Design.
Questions to Ponder
- Does the opinion of these three renowned scientists (Isaac Newton, George Washington Carver, and George Greenstein) carry weight with you?
- Do you agree or disagree with Isaac Newton that the Solar System is powerful evidence for the existence of God?

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)
Wednesday October 2, 2013 A.D.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
