27. Evidence for God – Design Convinces Scientists 12 – John Eccles

The Argument from Design is a powerful argument for the existence of God. It has convinced countless people throughout history and it’s used throughout the Bible.

Complex designs require a Designer to produce them. The kind of information the designs contain can only come from an intelligent Agent. This is the Argument from Design. The prequels of this Evidence for God series have extensively discussed the Design Argument.

Evolutionists promote the view that scientists support Evolutionism and that scientists do not believe evidence for design. But this is false. Many eminent scientists accept the Argument from Design.

This article and its prequels/sequels present quotations from a number of prominent scientists who have been convinced by the Argument from Design.

John Eccles

Nobel Laureate John Eccles

John Eccles

Australian neurophysiologist
Sir John Eccles (1903–1997) was one of the world’s leading researchers on the human brain.

Eccles was a Rhodes Scholar, earned his Ph.D. at Oxford, and was an Oxford professor for many years.

Eccles was knighted in 1958 for his lifetime of illuminating research on the brain. He wrote six books and published over 300 scholarly papers.

In 1963 he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his discoveries concerning the physiology of nerve cells. He proved that message transmission between nerve cells was chemical and not electrical, contrary to the beliefs of most scientists at the time.

As a biologist and expert in brain physiology, Eccles had no patience for evolutionism. He strongly supported intelligent design and divine creation. He wrote,

“Naturalism fails to account for our experienced uniqueness … I am constrained to attribute the uniqueness of the Self or Soul to a supernatural spiritual creation. … No other explanation is tenable; neither the genetic uniqueness with its fantastically impossible lottery, nor the environmental differentiations which do not determine one’s uniqueness, but merely modify it. This conclusion is of inestimable theological significance. It strongly reinforces our belief in the miraculous origin … a Divine creation. There is recognition not only of the Transcendent God, the Creator of the Cosmos … but also of the loving God to whom we owe our being.”
(Eccles, Evolution of the Brain: Creation of the Self, 1991, p. 237.)

“We come to exist through a divine act. That divine guidance is a theme throughout our life; at our death the brain goes, but that divine guidance and love continues. Each of us is a unique, conscious being, a divine creation.”
(Eccles, “Modern Biology and the Turn to Belief in God” in The Intellectual Speak Out About God, Varghese, R (Ed.), 1984, p. 50.)

Concerning human origins, Eccles said evolution of life is an “immensely improbable event.” Instead, he said life and mankind are a result of “divine design … wonderfully organized and planned.”
(Eccles, “A divine design: some questions on origins” in Cosmos, Bios, Theos: Scientists Reflect on Science, God, and the Origins of the Universe, Life, and Homo Sapiens, Margenau, H. and Varghese, R. (Eds.), 1992, p 162.)

Eccles understood the brain and its neural organization better than any living scientist. He said, “The brain is the best bit of communications design you could imagine.” Its design is so intricate that Eccles insisted it had to be intelligently designed by a Creator. He was using the Argument from Design to conclude there is a Creator.
(Robinson, D., “John Carew Eccles” in 100 Most Important People in the World Today, 1970, p 239.)

Questions to Ponder
  1. The foremost expert on the brain (at least in the post-Flood history of man) was certain the brain resulted from the design and plan of a Creator. Do you agree or do you think the human brain could have accidentally evolved through trillions upon trillions of random genetic errors?
  2. Eccles said evolution of life is “immensely improbable.” Why do people insist on believing “improbability” when all human experience says “a design implies the existence of a Designer”?
  3. Why do you think some scientists dismiss Eccles’ declaration that evolution is “immensely improbable”?
  4. Share your thoughts on these questions in the comments below. It could encourage or help another reader.

Soli Deo Gloria.

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)
Wednesday December 18, 2013 A.D.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
