36. Evidence for God – Design Convinces Scientists 19 – Henry Schaefer

Complex designs require a Designer to produce them. This is the Argument from Design, a powerful argument for the existence of God that has convinced countless people throughout history. It is also used throughout the Bible.

Evolutionists promote the view that scientists support Evolutionism and reject evidence for design. But this is false. Many eminent scientists accept the Argument from Design. This article and its prequels/sequels present quotations from a number of prominent scientists who have been convinced by the Argument from Design.

Prof. Henry F. Schaefer

Prof. Henry F. Schaefer

Henry Schaefer

Computational quantum chemist Henry F. Schaefer III is the Director of the Center for Computational Chemistry at the University of Georgia and the author of over 1300 scientific papers.

A December 23, 1991 cover article in U.S. News & World Report described Schaefer as a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Schaefer deduces the existence and character of the Creator from looking at the universe. This is in accord with the Apostle Paul’s words: “Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made.” (Romans 1:20)

Schaefer writes,

  • “A Creator must exist. The big bang ripples (April 1992) and subsequent scientific findings are clearly pointing to an ex nihilo creation consistent with the first few verses of the book of Genesis.
  • The Creator must have awesome power and wisdom. The quantity of material and the power resources within our universe are truly immense. The information, or intricacy, manifest in any part of the universe, and especially in a living organism, is beyond our ability to comprehend. And what we do see is only what God has shown us within our four dimensions of space and time!
  • The Creator is loving. The simplicity, balance, order, elegance, and beauty seen throughout the creation demonstrate that God is loving rather than capricious. Further, the capacity and desire to nurture and to protect, seen in so many creatures, makes sense if their Creator possesses these same attributes. It is apparent that God cares for His creatures, for He has provided for their needs.
  • The Creator is just and requires justice. Inward reflection and outward investigation affirm that human beings have a conscience. The conscience reflects the reality of right and wrong and the necessity of obedience.
  • Each of us falls hopelessly short of the Creator’s standard. We incur His displeasure when we violate any part of God’s moral law in our actions, our words, and our thoughts. Who can keep his or her thoughts and attitudes pure for even an hour? If each person falls short of his or her own standards, how much more so of God’s perfect standards?
  • Because the Creator is loving, wise and powerful, He made a way to rescue us. When we come to a point of concern about our personal failings, we can begin to understand from the creation around us that God’s love, wisdom, and power are sufficient to deliver us from our otherwise hopeless situation.
  • If we trust our lives totally to the Rescuer, Jesus Christ, we will be saved. The one and only path is to give up all human attempts to satisfy God’s requirements and put our trust solely in Jesus Christ and in His chosen means of redemption, namely, His death on the cross.”
  • (From Henry F. Schaefer, The Big Bang, Stephen Hawking, and God, 2004, p. 22)

Therefore…

Chemist Henry F. Schaefer recognized the signs of design in the universe. He used the Argument from Design to conclude there must be a Creator and to deduce some of His characteristics.

Questions to Ponder
  1. Did belief in a Creator handicap Dr. Schaefer’s scientific research? Did it interfere with his discoveries that have almost resulted in a Nobel prize?
  2. How would you answer someone who says that rejecting evolution is a backward position that impedes a scientist?
  3. Share your thoughts on these questions in the comments below. It could encourage or help another reader.

Soli Deo Gloria.

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)
Wednesday September 10, 2014 A.D.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)

  1. “We incur His displeasure when we violate any part of God’s moral law in our actions, our words, and our thoughts.”

I suppose I’m curious why this is a conclusion Schaefer came to. Most of his earlier deductions seem relatively logical but if God is loving, why would He be displeased when we violate any part of His law? Wouldn’t he be empathetic to our plight?

    • Thanks for reading and commenting. God is “empathetic to our plight.” That’s why He sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sin by dieing on the cross to provide a way for man to be reconciled to God.

I love my children, but I’m displeased when they disobey, and they incur my displeasure and suffer the consequences.
