The most complex computer ever made has over 100 billion miniature processors that communicate instructions to 100 trillion units. On average it takes about nine months to build one of these computers, but on occasion it’s done in less than six months.
How complex is this computer? It is far more sophisticated than the entire Internet with all its connected computers and servers.
This supercomputer can use logical reasoning and creativity to solve problems. It can even design other special use computers for specific tasks. It is used to design tools, to create art and music, and to facilitate athletic feats. It can learn and adapt to new information and conditions.
Astonishingly, a new one of these computers is formed every few seconds!
These computers are actually quite common. Every one of us uses one every day. They are relatively small, weighing only about three pounds.
What is it?
This complex computer that I’ve briefly described is the human brain. It has 100 billion neurons which communicate with 100 trillion cells in the human body. Neurons communicate using chemical and electrical signals. Messages from the foot to the brain travel at 150 miles per hour through the neural network. Messages speed from the hand to brain at over 200 miles per hour.
Scripture alludes to the mysterious complexity of the human body. The brain is just one amazing organ that the Creator designed for mankind’s benefit.
For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
(Psalm 139:14-16 NASB)
Scripture tells us that Yahweh formed the brain, one of man’s inward parts. It is certainly fearfully and wonderfully made!
Everyone recognizes that it took great intelligence of many people to develop the computer systems we use today. Yet none are nearly as sophisticated as the human brain. Is it reasonable to believe that the most complex entity known to man came about through chance evolution?
The Bible gives a clear and explicit answer to this question:
Know that the Lord Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. (Psalm 100:3 NASB)
Mankind, including the human brain, was made by the Creator God of the Bible. We did not make ourselves. We did not evolve ourselves from goo by way of the zoo to man.
It required tremendous intelligence to develop today’s multiple and varied technologies. It required a far, far greater intelligence to design and build Adam and Eve, the first humans.
Science Catches Up to the Bible
The Bible reports that the Creator God made us, fearfully and wonderfully. Even now scientists do not fully understand how the human brain is put together and how it works. Much remains to be discovered about this wonderful gift. Although the Bible is not primarily a science textbook, it does contain many scientific truths like this one and like those mentioned in this Science in the Bible series, truths that long pre-date their discovery by today’s scientists. This is strong evidence of divine authorship of the Bible.
Questions to Ponder
- What do you find intriguing about how the human brain works?
- Why do people continue to believe that our amazing brains evolved through random events?
Share your thoughts on these questions in the comments below. It could encourage or help another reader.
Soli Deo Gloria.
This is the eighth in the Science in the Bible series of blog posts. While there is much science connected with Creation and Noah’s Flood, this series will focus on lesser known scientific truths that were alluded to in the Bible long before they were known to scientists.
