Science in the Bible – Eating Pigs

(2 Minute Read)

Do you like to eat pigs?

I like ham, sausage, and various cuts of pork very much. But there is danger in eating pig meat if it is not cooked properly.

Eating undercooked pig meat can result in trichinosis. This disease is caused by cysts of Trichinella roundworms in meat that have not been killed by sufficient cooking heat. Symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, muscle pains, inflammation of heart and lungs, central nervous system complications, and facial swelling.

In the mid 1800s, American parasitologist Joseph Leidy (1823–1891) discovered that trichinosis was caused by ingesting parasites through eating undercooked meat.

But over 3,000 years previously Moses had prohibited the Hebrews from eating pork.
The pig, because it divides the hoof but does not chew the cud, it is unclean for you. You shall not eat any of their flesh nor touch their carcasses. (Deuteronomy 14:8)

This was one of the dietary laws that Moses instituted around 1500 BC. Pigs are scavengers and eat almost anything. In doing so, they pick up various disease-causing organisms from the garbage and waste they eat.

Other Mosaic dietary laws included the prohibition against eating sea creatures unless they had fins and scales (Leviticus 11:9-12). This is because bottom-feeders (those with without scales or fins) can carry diseases as a result of the waste material they consume.

Science Catches Up to the Bible

How did Moses know to institute these dietary restrictions to preserve Israel’s health thousands of years before modern scientists discovered them? Could it have been because the Great Creator told him as the Bible asserts?

Although the Bible is not primarily a science textbook, it does contain many scientific truths like this and those mentioned in this Science in the Bible series, truths that long pre-date their discovery by today’s scientists. This is strong evidence of divine authorship of the Bible.

Question to Ponder

Should we follow the OT dietary restrictions today? Why or why not?

Soli Deo Gloria.

This is the 26th article in the Science in the Bible series of blog posts. While there is much science connected with Creation and Noah’s Flood, this series will focus on lesser known scientific truths that were alluded to in the Bible long before they were known to scientists.

Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

  1. My family and I have given up eating animal, bird, and fish products, including dairy. In the past farmers have ground up cows to feed to other cows (cows were not created to eat meat) resulting in mad cow disease which cannot be killed by high heat cooking. Massive antibiotics fed continually to animals, birds, and fish result in super-bugs being present in their flesh. We have decided, for our health, to eat more like Daniel. We have noticed a marked improvement in our health. I suspect we (as created – before the fall) were not intended to eat animals (Gen. 1:29). I think (my own unprovable hypothesis) Adam and Eve were appalled with being clothed by the skins of dead animals by God as part of their judgement. They had clothed themselves with leaves. The Fall not only affected Adam and Eve but all of creation. I suspect Adam and Eve could not even conceive of killing before sinning and God’s judgement. Throughout the Bible, God continued to make dietary laws more liberal emphasizing the core message of Jesus and His eternal saving grace. When it comes right down to it, life is all about a close, personal, forgiven relationship with God through Jesus, and sharing that Good News with others. Life not about the food we put in our mouths, but the spiritual food we put in our hearts. We can choose what we want to eat and that can have an affect on our health and well-being. I choose to do my best to live as healthy as possible so my temple can remain in as good a shape as possible until I get to go to my forever home. I’m just visiting here.
