21. Famous Thinkers – Statesman Is a Creationist 1

(2 Minute Read)
What American presidential candidate said this?

“All the ills from which America suffers can be traced to the teaching of evolution. It would be better to destroy every other book ever written, and save just the first three verses of Genesis.”

This man was a two-term Congressman from Nebraska, a three-time American presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, and a United States Secretary of State.

Who is he?

Each state places two statues of favorite sons in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Nebraska chose this man’s statue as one of their two. He was a colonel of a Nebraska militia regiment in the Spanish-American War. This man said,

“Evolution seems to close the heart to some of the plainest spiritual truths while it opens the mind to the wildest guesses advanced in the name of science.”

Who is he?

This man ran for President on the Democratic ticket in 1896 and 1900 against William McKinley and in 1908 against William Howard Taft, losing all three times. He served as Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson, 1913-1915. He edited the Omaha World Herald and founded The Commoner Newspaper.

Who is this lawyer, politician, and statesman who vigorously defended Creation against Evolution?

William Jenning sBryan

William Jennings Bryan

This man was William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925).

At age 36 in 1896, Bryan is the youngest man ever to run for President on a major party ticket. In his three presidential elections, he received 493 electoral votes. This total is more than any other candidate in history who never won the presidency.

William Jennings Bryan was a national figure. By the 1920s he averaged 200 speeches yearly as the nation’s premier anti-evolution crusader. He addressed state legislatures, wrote books and dozens of newspaper articles, and blanketed the nation with his syndicated column, “Weekly Bible Talks.” His Bible class in a Miami park numbered 5,000 weekly.

Bryan’s 1924 Nashville lecture, Is the Bible True?, was distributed nationwide and spurred passage of a Tennessee bill that outlawed the teaching of evolution in government schools.

Read the next article in this Famous Thinkers series to learn how Bryan defended Creation against Evolutionism in one of history’s most famous courtroom trials, a trial which was provoked by that Tennessee bill outlawing the teaching of evolution.

Questions to Ponder

1. If William Jennings Bryan had been elected president, would thinking Christians of the day have felt embarrassed to stand with him for the Bible and Creation?
2. What courageous crusader of today is speaking out boldly to have an impact on anti-Biblical culture?

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:4)

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
