Global Warming in the Bible

(4 Minute Read)

The currently purported global warming scare is not a sure thing. Weather continually changes. Some centuries of earth history have been warmer than today; others have been colder.

Experts Say: No Global Warming

Many people, including many scientists, have major doubts about the extent and significance of today’s purported global warming. For example, over 31,000 American scientists have signed a Global Warming Petition stating that man-generated greenhouse gases will not disrupt earth’s climate and that more atmospheric CO2 is beneficial.

Harvard-educated public policy analyst Peter Ferrara reported in Forbes on the 2012 International Climate Change Conference. The conference concluded:

Climate change itself is already in the process of definitively rebutting climate alarmists who think human use of fossil fuels is causing ultimately catastrophic global warming. That is because natural climate cycles have already turned from warming to cooling, global temperatures have already been declining for more than 10 years, and global temperatures will continue to decline for another two decades or more.
(Peter Ferrara, Sorry Global Warming Alarmists, The Earth Is Cooling, Forbes.com, May 31, 2012.)

Weather Channel co-founder and meteorologist John Coleman (1934–2018) received the Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year award in 1983 from the American Meteorological Society. Coleman insisted the theory of man-made climate change was not scientifically credible, calling it the “greatest scam in history.” He said,

I have studied climate change seriously for years. It has become a political and environment agenda item, but the science is not valid. . . . There is no significant man-made global warming at this time, there has been none in the past, and there is no reason to fear any in the future. Efforts to prove the theory that carbon dioxide is a significant greenhouse gas and pollutant causing significant warming or weather effects have failed. There has been no warming over 18 years.
(Jason Taylor, ‘Global warming the greatest scam in history’ claims founder of Weather Channel, The Express, June 9, 2015.)

Even Greenpeace co-founder and former president Patrick Moore disputes climate change claims. He said,

This abomination that is occurring today in the climate issue is the biggest threat to the Enlightenment that has occurred since Galileo. Nothing else comes close to it. . . . It’s taking over science with superstition and a kind of toxic combination of religion and political ideology. There is no truth to this. It is a complete hoax and scam.
(Tyler Durden, Global Warming A “Hoax And Scam” Pushed By Greedy Government Scientists: Greenpeace Co-Founder, March 08, 2019.)

Thus it is apparent that today’s global warming claims are fallacious and highly political. Nonetheless, global warming will eventually occur at some point in the future on a massive and extreme scale. This we know with certainty from the Bible itself!

Biblical Global Warming

Scripture speaks of an intense global warming that will occur in the future:
The LORD will come in fire and . . . His rebuke with flames of fire. For the LORD will execute judgment by fire. (Isaiah 66:15-16).
The day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,” says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 4:1)

But this disastrous warming is due to solar activity, not man-generated CO2 emissions. The sun will be given power in the last days to scorch men with fire. Men will be seared with fierce heat. (Revelation 16:8-9)

Despite major doubts by many people about today’s purported global warming, there can be no doubt about the future global warming. The entire universe will be burned up.
The present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment . . . earth and its works will be burned up . . . the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat. (2 Peter 3:7-12)

This will not only be a global warming, but it will be a universal warming as the universe disintegrates in heat. The heavens and earth will be destroyed by burning as the elements will melt with intense heat.

What is the Apostle Peter’s “environmental counsel” regarding this impending global and universal warming? How does he say we should prepare? Peter’s “prepper advice” is very different from the advice of today’s proclaimers of global warming. Peter says this:
“Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness. . . Be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless. . . Be on your guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.” (2 Peter 3:11,14-18)

In short, the Apostle Peter says to live righteously, grow in grace, and don’t be led astray.

The Apostle Paul also gives similar good advice. He urges,
“Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

The counsel of Scripture given through Peter and Paul is better than that of today’s global warming doomsayers.

It’s interesting that Peter and Paul both encourage diligent investigation to avoid being deceived. This suggests that Bible believers need to examine claims — including global warming claims — and not just accept them without evaluation.

Here’s a Rebus puzzle that reveals when the real global warming will occur. Can you figure out what this Rebus puzzle represents? Try to solve the puzzle before you look at the answer below.

The Global Warming everyone should be concerned about is the Biblical one that will come suddenly like a thief in the night (2 Peter 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:2). That’s the one that should drive personal, political, social, and economic changes.

Questions to Ponder

1. What else can inform thinking when scientists on different sides of an issue make conflicting claims?
2. How can you use global warming chatter as a segue to a conversation about God‘s judgment, mercy, and grace?
3. Do you take the need to prepare for future divine judgment as seriously as the urge to recycle and use resources responsibly?

But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. . .But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
