Every House Is Built by Someone

(2 Minute Read)

Have you ever seen a house that built itself?

Hebrews uses this argument as it presents the supremacy of Jesus.

For He [Jesus] has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. (Hebrews 3:3-4)

The first-century Jews esteemed Moses more than any other personage. But Hebrews says Jesus is greater than Moses because He in essence built Moses. Since the builder of a house has more honor than the house, Jesus has more honor than Moses.

Hebrews bases this on the obvious truth that “every house is built by someone.” In more general terms, every effect has a cause. And Hebrews identifies the ultimate cause of everything as God when it says “the builder of all things is God.”

The author of Hebrews was a creationist!

Hebrews concludes with a warning to believers:
Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me. (Hebrews 3:7-8)

This is a quote from Psalm 95:7-9. Hebrews quotes this passage three times in chapters three and four.

Hebrews warns and urges believers to hold fast to the true and living God, the builder of all things:
Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end. (Hebrews 3:12-14)

Questions to Ponder

1. If a house can’t build itself, can a far more complex living cell create itself from nothing?
2. In what way can you encourage a fellow believer today to hold fast?

For Christ and His Kingdom. Soli Deo Gloria.

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,
And saw My works for forty years.”
(Hebrews 3:7-9)
