Bible-Science Starter Library 1

(4 Minute Read)

While you were lying on the beach last summer, did you ask yourself, “How’s my Bible-Science bookshelf shaping up?”

Not only is this a good time to evaluate your personal library, but it is time to do so for your church library as well, because October is Church Library Month. Church libraries are still an important resource.

Here is a suggested Bible-Science Starter Library of 15 books for your personal library and for your church. These books are rich brain food on Creation, Evolution, Intelligent Design, Rock Layers, Fossils, Dinosaurs, and Noah’s Flood. Reading them will boost thinking skills, strengthen Biblical convictions, and superbly prepare you for great conversations with questioning believers, unbelieving friends, or any truth seekers.

Authors include a physical chemist, hydraulic engineer, biochemist, law professor, geneticist, molecular biologist, journalist, chess champion, educator, medical doctor, theologian, astronomer, and computer consultant. Not all are creationists, Christians, or even theists. Some accept the Big Bang, stellar evolution, a long age for the universe, and even aspects of biological evolution. Nevertheless, all distinctly contribute to a Biblical understanding of science. None is infallible. Always measure everything you read by the Bible.

These books are high-school level and up. For balance and variety, I selected only one book per author, even though several have authored multiple books that could be on this list. Five books with brief descriptions follow. Two succeeding blog posts will cover the remaining 10 books in my suggested Bible-Science Starter Library.

The Genesis Flood: The Biblical Record and Its Scientific Implications — Henry Morris and John Whitcomb
Dr. Henry M. Morris, hydraulic engineering professor and founder of the Institute for Creation Research, is the father of modern scientific Biblical creationism, and this book laid the foundation. Dr. Whitcomb is a seminary professor. This book is the best resource for Noah’s Flood. First published in 1961, it’s been reprinted 32 times and is still a must-read. In 2006 Christianity Today ranked it #22 among “The Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals” in the last half-century. It argues for a worldwide flood and explains how rock layers, fossils, and the Ice Age resulted from Noah’s Flood. It addresses the sources and disposition of the Flood waters, how Noah fit animals (including dinosaurs) on the ark, and the age of the earth. My wife says this is the book that first got her intrigued with scientific aspects of the Bible when she read it in her late teens.

The Lie: Evolution — Ken Ham
Ken Ham is the founder of Answers in Genesis with its Creation Museum and Ark Encounter. Ham says Genesis is foundational to all Christian doctrine and must be interpreted literally. Doctrines like sin and salvation, institutions like marriage and government, the beginnings of culture and industry — all have their foundation in Genesis. Ham argues that if God does not really mean what He says in Genesis, why should we trust the rest of the Bible? The religion of Evolutionism is a lie from hell and is the root cause of most of the world’s problems because it denies God the Creator.

Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No! — Duane Gish
Dr. Duane T. Gish, a biochemist and premier creationist debater, annihilates the supposed primary evidence for evolution — the fossil record. Darwin himself realized the strongest objection to evolution was that fossils did not support it, asking, “If species have descended from other species by insensibly fine gradations, why do we not everywhere see innumerable transitional forms?” Darwin believed future fossil discoveries would validate his theory, but in 160 years — nothing! Gish shows the fossil record is characterized by abrupt appearance of life forms, absence of transitional forms, and constancy of life forms. Gish argues that the fossils do not support the theory of evolution. In fact, he shows that fossils are one of the strongest arguments against evolution. Fossils support creation but undermine macro-evolution.

“My road to atheism was paved by science. . . .
But, ironically, so was my later journey to God.”

—Author Lee Strobel

The Case for a Creator — Lee Strobel
Lee Strobel, a Yale Law School graduate, journalist, legal editor, and pastor, was a spiritual skeptic well into his career. He said, “My road to atheism was paved by science. . . .But, ironically, so was my later journey to God.” Strobel confronts eight eminent scientists and philosophers with an atheist’s tough questions. The cross-examinations build a strong scientific case that the universe was intelligently designed, and they show the logical and evidential weaknesses of Darwinism. His questions involve cosmology, astronomy, physics, cellular biology, biochemistry, and DNA. The story is absorbing. The arguments are compelling. Evolutionism is no longer scientifically or logically tenable. Science and the Bible give consistent testimony of a Creator. A student edition is available for younger readers.

Creation’s Tiny Mystery — Robert V. Gentry
Having discovered riveting evidence for creation, Robert Gentry struggled against the scientific establishment that strove to suppress it. Originally an ardent evolutionist, Gentry found radioactive polonium halos in earth’s basement rocks. The half-life is so short (3 minutes) that the rocks had to solidify rapidly for halos to form. Molten rock would have taken too long to cool, leaving no halos. This evidence caused Gentry to abandon his evolutionary beliefs. Gentry believes the halos are some of the Creator’s “fingerprints.” His investigations show evidence for a global flood and earth’s age in thousands rather than billions of years. Evolutionists call Gentry’s halos a “tiny mystery,” but they have proposed no other explanation.

Ten more books will be added to this Bible-Science Starter Library in the next two articles, Bible-Science Starter Library 2 and Bible-Science Starter Library 3. This starter library documents the paucity of evidence for Darwinism and the plethora of evidence for Creation. Evolutionism is not science; it is atheistic naturalism masquerading as science. True science points to God. Biblical Creationism is soundly supported by scientific evidence, logical reasoning, and Scripture.

Questions to Ponder

1. What books would you add to my Bible-Science Starter Library?
2. With so many videos available, what case would you make in defense of books?

  1. Great article! We have some of those books in our library at home, and the ones we don’t I hope we can investigate. “CREATION’S TINY MYSTERY” is a book I have never read, but now want to read. Thank you so much for making these things available. What a blessing.

I’m hoping that in your continuing library-building articles, you will be including “DINOSAURS, UNLEASHED” by Kyle Butt and Eric Lyons, beautifully illustrated by Lewis Lavoie. It’s not just fun to read, it’s also beautiful to look at. As we are beginning our Christmas shopping, I’m heavily campaigning for my husband to let me buy copies of this book for all our adult children, and a couple of others I think would love it.

Again, thanks again for a well-designed, well-thought-out article that has been pleasant to read. It’s good to know what we believe and why. Thanks for making that a little easier.

    Best Regards,

    • Thanks for nominating this interesting dinosaur book. I’m not familiar with it and did not include it as one of the 15 books in my Bible-Science Starter Library listed in the three blog articles.
