2019 Christmas Quiz Answers

(3 Minute Read plus video)

Homemade Christmas Quiz Card
“Angels appear to shepherds”

Last week I posted the
2019 Christmas Quiz
which consisted of properly ordering a scrambled list of events surrounding the birth of Jesus. It’s a game I played with my children using homemade Christmas Quiz Cards, some of which are pictured in this blog.

The game was designed to teach the children the facts of the first Christmas. I used 5×7 file cards with brief phrases and pictures cut from Christmas cards or Sunday School papers to describe the nativity events. The children’s task was to arrange the scrambled cards in order.

Here is the scrambled list of 25 events to put in correct historical order. The correct order (Answer) follows.

25 Scrambled Events Surrounding Jesus’ Birth

Jesus is born and laid in manger
Mary visits Elizabeth
Angel explains birth to Joseph
Angel Gabriel appears to Mary
Simeon blesses Jesus
Joseph wants to put Mary away
Herod sends Magi to Bethlehem
Shepherds find Baby Jesus
Magi see star in the east
Herod kills Bethlehem baby boys
Anna testifies of Jesus
Magi worship Jesus
Baby circumcised and named Jesus
Angels appear to shepherds
Joseph & Mary go to Bethlehem for census
Virgin Mary conceives by the Holy Spirit
Mary and Joseph return to Israel and settle in Nazareth
Magi warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod
Angel sends Joseph home from Egypt after Herod’s death
Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt with Jesus
Magi give gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus
Angel warns Joseph about Herod in a dream
Baby Jesus presented to God in temple at Jerusalem
Magi arrive in Jerusalem inquiring about Jesus
Shepherds return to fields glorifying and praising God

9. Shepherds find Baby Jesus
10. Shepherds return to fields glorifying and praising God

25. Mary and Joseph return to Israel and settle in Nazareth

Here is a Christmas Events Harmonization I prepared which I would read daily to the family during the Christmas season. It is a harmonization of the Gospel passages telling of the Birth of Jesus Christ. It is the Biblical basis for the ordering above.

Grade Your Quiz Answer

I developed a metric to use to measure how good an ordering was and to compare children’s answers. I would add up the absolute differences between the correct position and the placed position for each of the 25 events to get a quiz score. The lower the number, the better the answer. A perfect quiz gives a score of 0.

For example, if item #6 “Joseph & Mary go to Bethlehem for census” were listed first and item #1 “Angel Gabriel appears to Mary” were listed second, then
|6-1| = 5 plus |1-2| = 1 gives a score of 5 + 1 = 6 for the first two items.
Continue adding up the absolute differences for the remaining 23 items to give a total quiz score. The closer to zero that the total quiz score is, the better the quiz answer.

Meaning of Christmas

Why is it important to understand the events of the first Christmas as encouraged by this quiz? What is the significance of Christmas? Here’s a 2-minute YouTube Christmas video from Living Waters on the meaning and reason for Christmas:

Questions to Ponder

1. What inaccuracies related to Jesus’ birth are often in circulation?
2. Why does it matter if imaginative whimsy or distortion gets mixed in with Bible history?
3. What is unusual (but correct) about the above picture of the magi worshipping Jesus (2nd homemade Christmas Quiz Card above)?
