What did you think about the stimulus package enacted by the U.S. Congress and President to help with the economic consequences of the Wuhan virus? What did it stimulate for you?
Did you question the stimulus payments as I did? Did you wonder where all the money will come from? Did the ensuing increase in the country’s debt concern you?
Did you know that the Bible speaks of a totally different kind of Stimulus Package? It’s a stimulus that would have a far greater beneficial effect than the congressional one.
According to figures from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Global Dashboard, as of July 14, 2020, over 571,000 have died worldwide from the Wuhan virus. Over 135,000 have died from it in the United States, over 6,000 in my state, and 1,054 in my county.
But these numbers are somewhat inflated because they report “deaths with the Wuhan virus” as “deaths from the Wuhan virus.” Everyone dying while having the virus is included in the stats — even though the actual cause of death may have been something else.
The Bible’s Stimulus Package
The author of Hebrews outlines the Biblical Stimulus Package:
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:23-25 NASB)
Love and good deeds comprise the Biblical stimulus package.
Jesus of Nazareth described the same stimulus package in these words:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39)
Jesus expressed the same idea as the second commandment in what has come to be known as the Golden Rule this way:
In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)
Loving others as we love ourselves and treating others the way we would like to be treated will have a tremendous stimulative effect — economically, physically, and socially.
I am stimulated by the One in whom I live and move and have my being (Acts 17:28) — the Great Creator. And I believe that His prescription for life is the best stimulus package for a healthy society, nation, and world.
Questions to Ponder
1. What can you do today to “stimulate love and good deeds” among your family and friends?
2. Since we all will die eventually, whether from the Wuhan virus or otherwise, are you ready to die and meet the Great Creator?
