Science in the Bible – Bread

(2 Minute Read. 12Jan2022)

What is the leading cause of death for people in the United States?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is cardiovascular disease.

Did you know that the Bible mentions a way to strengthen your heart that has been scientifically confirmed?

Check out this passage from Psalms:
He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,
And vegetation for the service of man,
That he may bring forth food from the earth,
And wine that makes glad the heart of man,
Oil to make his face shine,
And bread which strengthens man’s heart.
(Psalm 104:14-15 NKJV)

This psalm explicitly says that bread strengthens man’s heart. It was probably written by David about 3,000 years ago when bread was more nutritious than now. Nowadays wheat flour is altered in order to give bread a longer shelf life. Modern commercial bread has had crucial nutrients for the heart and circulation system removed, including omega-3 fatty acids, lecithin, and vitamin E.

A Biblical bread recipe from the 6th century BC indicates how nutritious bread once was. God gave the prophet Ezekiel this recipe for the bread he was to eat:
But as for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt, put them in one vessel and make them into bread for yourself. (Ezekiel 4:9)

A Science Daily article “How Eating Bread Can Improve Cardiovascular Health” from November 28, 2012 reports research by professors at the University of Barcelona showing that daily consumption of wholemeal bread can help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Three thousand years ago Scripture said that God made bread to strengthen the heart. It’s part of the Great Creator‘s benevolent design for the care of His people. And within the last 10 years scientific research has confirmed the value of bread for heart health. Optimal ingredients are ancient grains, combined without being stripped and refined.

Although the Bible is not primarily a science textbook, it does hint at many scientific truths like this one and like those mentioned in this Science in the Bible series, truths that long pre-date their discovery by today’s scientists. This is strong evidence of divine authorship of the Bible and provides good reason to trust what the Bible says that we don’t yet fully understand.

Questions to Ponder

1. Have you sampled the hearty wholesomeness of ancient grains? Which is your favorite?
2. What Bible wisdom grabs your attention and adherence today?

Soli Deo Gloria.

This is the 35th article in the Science in the Bible series of blog posts. While there is much science connected with Creation and Noah’s Flood, this series will mostly focus on lesser known scientific truths that were alluded to in the Bible long before they were known to scientists.
