26. Famous Thinkers – Patriot Is a Creationist

(3 Minute Read. 19Jan2022)

What former cobbler said this upon hearing about a great American military victory?

“This is the Lord’s doing, and marvelous in our eyes!”

Despite being widowed once, this man had 15 offspring through two wives, with 13 children reaching adulthood.
Who is he?

This man represented Connecticut both in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate. Who is he?

This Founding Father was part of the five-man committee that wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Who is he?

This man is the only one who signed all four of America’s founding documents:
Articles of Association – 1774,
Declaration of Independence – 1776,
Articles of Confederation – 1777,
U.S. Constitution – 1787.
He also signed the 1774 Petition to the King (George III) calling for repeal of the Intolerable Acts. Who is he?

Patrick Henry described this delegate as one of the three greatest men at the Constitutional Convention. This man made 138 speeches to the delegates, and he helped draft the Connecticut Compromise which broke the deadlock between how the large states and small states would be represented.

Who is this man?

Roger Sherman

This man is Roger Sherman (1721–1793).

After a crucial victory in the American revolutionary war, Roger Sherman said,

“This is the Lord’s doing, and marvelous in our eyes!”

He said this on October 17, 1777, when he learned that British General John Burgoyne had surrendered 6,000 British troops to American General Horatio Gates after the Battle of Saratoga about 30 miles north of Albany, New York. This victory was instrumental in persuading France both to recognize American independence and to openly provide military support to the patriots.

In 1788 Sherman helped formulate his church’s creed. He personally wrote these words reflecting his belief in the Great Creator and in the truths of Scripture:

“I believe . . . that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are a revelation from God, and a complete rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy Him. . . .
That He made man at first perfectly holy, that the first man sinned, and . . . all became sinners in consequence . . . and on account of sin are liable to all the miseries of this life, to death, and to the pains of hell forever.
I believe that God . . . did send His own Son to become man, die in the room and stead of sinners and thus to lay a foundation for the offer of pardon and salvation to all mankind, so as all may be saved who are willing to accept the Gospel offer.”

This inscription on Roger Sherman’s tomb reflects the character of his life:

Possessed of a strong, clear, penetrating mind, and singular perseverance, he became the self-taught scholar, eminent for jurisprudence and policy. . . . He was a man of approved integrity; a cool, discerning Judge; a prudent, sagacious Politician; a true, faithful, and firm Patriot. He ever adorned the profession of Christianity which he made in youth; and distinguished through life for public usefulness,
died in the prospect of a blessed immortality.

Belief in a Creator is common sense based on looking at what has been created. This was the conviction and argument of
Paul the Apostle (Romans 1:18-23),
President Thomas Jefferson,
Benjamin Franklin,
Sir Isaac Newton,
John Calvin,
Dr. Werner von Braun,
George Washington Carver,
Johann Kepler,
Blaise Pascal,
Robert Boyle,
Dr. Raymond Damadian,
President Herbert Hoover,
Billy Sunday,
William Jennings Bryan,
Dr. Rosalind Picard,
Professor Charles Hodge,
Roger Sherman,
and innumerable other leading thinkers throughout history. These men and women believed in a Creator and Intelligent Designer. None would have been fooled by the evolutionism that hoodwinks so many today. Throughout history the vast majority of mankind has known that there must be a Creator.

Roger Sherman believed man was made by God. He would be astonished that so many people today believe in man’s random, chance evolution from slime. I suspect he would laugh at the absurdity of attempting to reconcile the speculations of evolutionism with the authoritative testimony of Scripture in which he believed. Today’s intellectuals would do well to pay heed to this eminent patriot — one whose mental prowess and achievements far exceed those of most today.

“contending earnestly for the faith”
“destroying speculations against the knowledge of God”
“for the defense of the gospel”
(Jude 1:3; 2 Cor 10:5; Phil 1:16)
Wednesday January 19, 2022 A.D.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:18-23)
