Significance of Noah’s Flood

(4 Minute Read. 6Jul2022)

Who cares about an ancient flood? What difference does it make? Does it have any significance today?

The Bible vividly underscores the truth and reality of Noah’s Flood. The first 11 chapters of Genesis cover the first two millennia of world history. Four of those 11 chapters cover Noah’s Flood, compared to three chapters spent describing the creation of the universe and the fall of man!

The oceanic, atmospheric, and geological upheavals of Noah’s Flood defy imagination. The Flood destroyed the world (2 Peter 3:6). The Flood was foundational geologically, historically, and theologically, affecting every individual on earth ever since.

Theological Significance of Noah’s Flood

What a dramatic, unforgettable demonstration of God’s character and His judgment on sin! Both Jesus (Matthew 24:37-39) and the Apostle Peter (1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5; 3:4-7) refer to the worldwide Flood as historic fact when teaching about the Second Coming and the end of the world. In Hebrews Noah’s Flood illuminates faith and obedience.
By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. (Hebrews 11:7)

Prior to the evolution craze, Noah’s Flood was almost universally recognized to be global and credited as the cause of earth’s sedimentary strata and fossils. The hypothetical multi-billion-year geologic column “proving” evolution exists only on paper, having been assembled piecemeal from scattered sections in order to shore up evolutionist philosophy. The reality is that layers of sediment actually were deposited within a year by Noah’s Flood. Incredibly, these effects of the Flood have been dismissed and instead attributed to the long ages required for evolution in order to accommodate and promote that false theory.

Evolutionists blindly claim this billions of years without any sound scientific basis. The original explanation in terms of Noah’s Flood has never been disproved. It was simply rejected because it did not fit the preferred evolutionary worldview. The Biblical worldview properly attributes these geological effects to Noah’s Flood and recognizes the Flood as God’s judgment on a sin-soaked world.

Historical Significance of Noah’s Flood

Noah’s Flood dramatically impacted mankind’s history, including the development of cultures and races. History cannot be correctly understood apart from the Flood’s devastation and the earth’s repopulation by Noah’s descendants.

Hundreds of cultures worldwide have accounts of the earth’s total destruction by a flood except for one family saved in a boat. Even peoples living far inland, such as the Hopi Indians of the American Southwest and the Incas high in the Peruvian Andes, tell of a global Flood covering the highest mountains and extinguishing almost all life. Such accounts provide independent testimony to a worldwide Flood.

Chronologically Noah’s Flood is fundamental. It is critical to the “age of the earth” which directly impacts Creation-Evolution controversies. Noah’s Flood contradicts the supposed evolutionary history of the world. Fossils and sedimentary strata found around the world were deposited in about one year by the Flood and then solidified over the following decades. Rock layers supposedly proving an ancient earth are more accurately understood as results of Noah’s Flood, not representing millions of years of imaginary history. Evolutionists blindly claim this without sound scientific basis.

Geological Significance of Noah’s Flood

Noah’s Flood is the pivotal geological event of all time because it utterly transformed the globe. Mountains, ravines, ocean basins, and continents probably all date from the time of the Flood — they were either formed or drastically altered by Noah’s Flood.

Peaks and valleys are beautiful, but they greatly complicate the building of cities and roads. Land composition and contours strongly influence the type of cultures which develop. Land forms also profoundly affect weather patterns all over the world. In ensuing centuries, the Ice Age most likely resulted from after effects of Noah’s Flood.

Turbulent waters of the Flood caused massive erosion worldwide. Swirling sediments were hydraulically sorted and settled in layers, solidifying during the following decades. The Flood laid down vast extents of biomass worldwide making coal and oil reserves for most of today’s energy.

Sedimentary rock layers are water-borne sediments of mud and sand which have solidified. Some sedimentary layers tens of feet thick extend multi-state; others span continents. Only a global flood would have the power to erode, transport, and deposit such immense quantities of sediment. Such regional and continental deposits are found worldwide and imply a global flood.

Often sedimentary strata are not flat. Very thick layers have been bent and folded without any cracking or breaking. This folding must have occurred before mud and sand layers hardened, implying rapid deposition by a flood. Great mountain chains such as the Himalayas, Alps, Appalachians, and Rockies are sedimentary rock deposited by the Flood which buckled up afterwards.
You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
At Your rebuke they fled,
At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
The mountains rose; the valleys sank down
To the place which You established for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.
(Psalm 104:6-9)

Noah’s Flood explains earth’s fossils — petrified remains of once-living plants and animals. The Flood would have laid down great deposits of water-borne sediments full of plant and animal remains. As the sediments solidified into rock, the remains fossilized. Remains must be buried quickly in order to fossilize instead of decaying.

Sometimes tree trunks pass through many layers. These polystrate fossils prove rapid deposition of the layers, for otherwise the trees would have rotted away. Rapid deposition of successive layers is also evidenced by razor-sharp demarcations between layers — there is no erosion, no roots between layers, no soil formation. Animal tracks, surface ripples, and raindrop marks have all been preserved as fossils. This means they were quickly covered by sediments; otherwise they would not have been preserved.

Deep-sea limestone containing thousands upon thousands of ocean-bottom fossils crowns Mt. Everest. How did it get there? Marine fossils atop all mountain ranges worldwide relentlessly proclaim, “Global Flood!” Fossil-laden sedimentary strata worldwide are indelible records of a global flood.

What outcome would you expect based on the Genesis report that a worldwide flood destroyed every living thing on the face of the earth? Exactly this: in fossil graveyards all over the world, buried under layers of mud, billions of animal and marine fossils lie jumbled together in death.

Evolutionists love pronouncing, “The present is the key to the past.” This is exactly backwards. The truth is, “The past is the key to the present.” A Biblically-informed understanding of the past explains the present geological condition of the earth by Noah’s Flood.

Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
(Genesis 6:13-17)

  1. I love your work, especially the robins and Noah. I am a creationist but have always believed the old earth theories because of carbon dating. Your recent post on Noah are convincing of new earth theories. Could you help me understand dating methods in light of the flood?

    • Thanks for reading and commenting. Regarding your question, the basic idea is that Noah’s Flood accomplished in one year what evolutionists think took billions of years. Some years back, I wrote a series of 45 blog articles on the age of the earth. The first one is How Old Is the Earth?, and it has links to the entire series. Starting with the 31st one, Age of the Earth—Radiometric Dating, I wrote 15 articles on scientific dating methods and their fallacies, including radiometric dating and Carbon-14. These will help you as you consider the issue.

  2. Thank you for all your messages & scientific with spiritual guidance. Mankind does try to diminish what the Bible says as is said in Romans 1:18-25. The Chinese character for boat/ship is 8 mouths in a box. Noah’s family on the ark were 8 people. Analysts have tried to debunk this saying the character is too young. However, China passed down several characters written millennia ago, which would support the BIBLE’s view of our relationship to GOD. The current alternative explanation doesn’t hold water. A former neighbour & friend, a professor of Logic at Oxford University, once told me that even very small tribes in the wild, all around the world, with only a handful of members have a tradition of a universal, worldwide flood. Thank you for you scientific explanation which I’ve copied to give to friends. Colin Robert Lewis
