Noah Says Don’t Miss the Boat

(3 Minute Read. 30Nov2022)

The Apostle Peter called Noah a “preacher of righteousness.”
(2 Peter 2:5)

Noah preached to a sin-soaked world full of wickedness, violence, and evil.
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. . . . Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.”
(Genesis 6:5,11-13)

No doubt much of Noah’s preaching took place during his construction of the Ark. Just as speakers today use visual aids to attract and maintain attention, Noah surely used his enormous ship as an attention-getter for his message. The huge ship was certainly an object of curiosity that drew people within hearing of Noah’s warnings of impending judgment and his calls for repentance.

God had warned Noah about things not yet seen, like rain, floods, and explosions of subterranean water (Hebrews 11:7). And Noah warned and implored his world to pay heed.

Noah’s message was essentially,
Judgment is coming! Don’t miss the boat!

But Noah preached in vain. His message was ignored. His hearers missed the boat!

Part of the reason Noah’s message was ignored was that he called men to righteousness with the threat of judgment by things not yet seen. No doubt Noah’s words sounded like foolishness to his hearers, for they had no experience of what he was proclaiming — a flood that would destroy the entire world.

Jesus of Nazareth also warned of coming judgment through things not yet seen. He said,
“But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.” (Matthew 24:29-31)

He even compared His return to the days of Noah:
“For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.” (Matthew 24:37-39)

Thus the message for today is similar to the message Noah preached:
Judgment is coming! Don’t miss the boat! Turn to Jesus!

Questions to Ponder

1. What kind of audience are you? Are you a listener who boards the boat or a scoffer who misses the boat?
2. Do you take seriously Scripture’s command to be a herald today of God’s Word, warning of His judgment and of the merciful salvation He offers? (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
(Genesis 6:13-17)

  1. This reminds me of the warning to the watchman in Ezekiel 33:
The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.
    (Ezekiel 33:1‭-‬6 ESV)
