Stacking Wood

(3 Minute Read. 15May2024)

Over the last few weeks, a logging operation in our yard yielded 11 cords of wood from a large maple that once towered over our house. This was described in the preceding blog posts:
Lots of Wood and Splitting Logs.

As a result, we now have very large piles of splits around the yard. My tree problem was converted to a log problem — which has now been reduced to a stacking problem.

In this photo, I am pushing a cart loaded with wood to a pile for stacking.

The next picture shows the biggest of my three wood racks. The maximum vertical dimension of the wood stack is 8 ft, 3 in. The horizontal dimension of the wood stack is 18 ft, 8 in. The ladder hanging on the brick wall behind the wood stack is just barely visible above the wood. It will not be used for a while.

Another wood stack holding about 1 1/3 cords on the back of the house by our chimney was pictured in Lots of Wood. A third rack along the 6-foot-high fence at the edge of our property is 18 feet long.

But these racks and stacks won’t hold all the wood, so I put up another rack in front of my big patio stack. I used cinder blocks and seven 8-foot-long two-by-fours. I laid 3 of the two-by-fours edgewise on top of 3 cinder blocks. In each end block, I put 2 two-by-fours standing up as shown in the next picture. This is a very easy, inexpensive, and quick rack to make. It is strong and holds lots of wood. In the picture, the two extra vertical cinder blocks are in place only temporarily to hold the horizontal two-by-four in position until a layer of wood is loaded.

As I have been working on storing this wood for use in the next few winters, I could not help but be reminded of Jesus’s words about accumulating possessions.
Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do since I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭15‬-‭21‬)

I am thankful for the Lord’s abundant provision of this wood for winter heat. But despite thoroughly enjoying this entire wood process, life does not consist solely of firewood. Jesus said, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3) Knowing, glorifying, and enjoying the Great Creator is what life is all about.

Now that warm weather is here, we are doing lots of camping. And we love to make ashes while camping. So at campgrounds, we do a lot of foraging for firewood and then stacking it nearby. I don’t bring wood with me from home.

Mobile Campground Logging Kit

Here is a picture of my mobile campground logging kit:
14-inch electric chainsaw, extension cords, chainsaw tool, chain sharpening file, Bar & Chain oil, safety glasses, work gloves, and Benchmade pocket knife. I have already put the kit to good use on multiple occasions as we scoured campgrounds for pre-ash material, collecting and cutting fallen logs and downed wood for campfires.

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
(James 1:17)
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.
(2 Corinthians 9:8)

Questions to Ponder

1. What specific abundant provision can spark a conversation about the Great Creator’s bounty in your life?
2. What tangible item might tempt you to excessive focus? How can you align your priorities with Jesus’ warning about life and possessions in Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭15‬?
