Wallenda, Niagara, & the Age of the Earth

(3 Minute Read plus video)

Nik Wallenda tightropes
across Niagara Falls

Daredevil Nik Wallenda, King of the Highwire, walked a tightrope across Niagara’s thundering Horseshoe Falls on June 15, 2012.

See Wallenda Tightropes Over Niagara Falls for the story with video and picture links.

ABC’s 3-hour coverage of Wallenda’s walk included numerous stunning shots of Niagara Falls. The grandeur of Niagara is impressive at 184 feet high with a water flow of 700,000 gal/sec. From where did such an awesome natural spectacle come?

My previous post Wallenda, Niagara, & Noah’s Flood argued that the Falls formed around 4,000 years ago as a result of Noah’s Flood and the ensuing Ice Age. Noah’s Flood is the pivotal geological event of all time because it utterly transformed the globe. A Biblically-informed understanding of the past explains the present geological condition of the earth by Noah’s Flood.

How does this perspective impact estimates for the age of the earth?

Age of the Earth
Chronologically Noah’s Flood is fundamental. It is critical to the “age of the earth” which directly impacts Creation-Evolution controversies.

Noah’s Flood contradicts the supposed evolutionary history of the world. Fossils and sedimentary strata found around the world were deposited in about one year by the Flood and then solidified over the following decades. Rock layers supposedly proving an ancient earth are more accurately understood as results of Noah’s Flood. They don’t represent millions of years of imaginary history. Evolutionists blindly claim this without sound scientific basis.

How old is the earth? Answers to this question are usually based on interpretations of physical evidence, not on direct observation. Interpretations are driven by worldviews. How old the earth looks depends on the worldview glasses you look through. One person may think it looks billions of years old. I think it looks like a flood-damaged globe that’s thousands of years old.

Dependable answers to age questions require eyewitness testimony. The only record of eyewitness testimony for the creation of the earth is Genesis which specifies heaven and earth were created about 6,000 years ago.

The push in the last two centuries to increase the age of the earth was motivated, not by evidence, but by evolutionism’s requirement for long eons of time. Throughout history the great preponderance of scholarship regarding the Biblical records and the unanimous testimony of cultures worldwide is that the earth is only thousands of years old. This was also the historic teaching of the church until the ascendancy of the theory of evolution in the 19th century. (See article on History’s Views on Chronology).

Scripture is filled with chronological information. Chronology anchors Scripture solidly in real-world history and underscores its authenticity. The Genesis chrono-genealogies record an unbroken line of descent from Adam to Abraham and provide a solid foundation for constructing a reliable chronology. Grammar and context support this, and numerous other Scriptures confirm it. (See article on The Genesis Chrono-genealogies.)

The Genesis chrono-genealogies show that Adam to Abraham covered about 2,000 years. Abraham to Christ was about 2,000 years. Adding 2,000 years from Christ to the present totals about 6,000 years for the age of the earth.

Using the Genesis chrono-genealogies we also ascertain that Noah’s Flood was about 2500 BC. This along with current erosion rates and estimated post-Flood erosion rates gives an estimate of 4,000 years for the age of Niagara Falls.

Here’s a YouTube video from ABC News of some of the science behind Wallenda’s Tightrope Walk Over Niagara Falls.

Soli Deo Gloria.

Hike the Bible 2 – Nazareth

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name. Worship the LORD in holy array. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters. The God of glory thunders. The LORD is over many waters. (Psalm 29:2-3)

  1. What was not mentioned was the fact that god made Adam on the sixth day! So if a day is like a thousand years and Adam wasn’t born or made until the sixth day then the earth is more than six thousand years old! It’s more like twelve thousand years old! Now there is the case if the lords day of rest! So add another thousand years! And durning this time of rest what did Adam do? So for a thousand years god did nothing with Adam! I totally agree the earth is not billions of years or even millions of years old! But I do believe its more than six and less than twenty!

    • Thanks for reading and commenting.
2 Peter 3:8 says, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
This does not mean that a day is the same as a thousand years. Obviously it’s not. A thousand years is made up of about 365,250 days. Peter means that with the Lord a day can be like a thousand years and vice-versa. God is outside time (because He created the space-time universe) and doesn’t experience time like men do.
Here is an article showing from the Genesis text itself why the Creation Days of Genesis must be understood to be normal earth days and not long eons of time: Are the Six Days of Creation Regular Days or Long Ages? The historical record in Genesis supplies compelling reasons proving the Creation Days were regular days, not thousand-year periods or long ages.

    • Continuing with my response to your comment, Killian, I don’t agree with lifting the “thousand years” comparison out of 2 Peter 3:8 and forcing it on the Creation events of Genesis. Each report must be understood in its own context.

In Genesis 1 the entire flow is that of a historical record, and every detail is presented as a straightforward timeline. The days of creation are simply days, as Exodus 20:11 makes crystal clear. Observing God’s command to keep the Sabbath rest meant that 52 times a year, His people would ponder the ordinary six-days-then-rest structure of Yahweh’s creative work.

In 2 Peter 3:3-9 the topic of concern is the early Christians’ discontent over God’s apparent delay in bringing history to culmination, delivering His believers and judging the wicked:
7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

God’s judgment is not tardy; His perspective on how quickly time passes is different from ours. But this cannot be used to distort Scripture’s record of ordinary events, such as Jesus’ words that He would be in the grave three days and three nights. We cannot use 2 Peter to say He was buried for three thousand years, or that the Six Days of Creation lasted thousands of years.
